Celebrity Teeth Whitening Hacks
Much of our fascination with achieving that perfect, white smile is inspired by the famous and successful faces we see on TV and film. These aspirational figures with stunningly smooth skin and perfect hair are often sporting a fabulously clean set of gnashers that appear as if they haven’t touched a pizza in their life, leading us all to look in the mirror and wonder “how on earth are their teeth so white?!”
Often, we realise that those impossible teeth are just that; cultivated over a few doctor appointments that, for the average joe on the street, are entirely unaffordable. However, keep your ear to the wall and occasionally you discover the odd little secret from the celebrity world, the occasional trick that helps them keep their teeth in tip-top shape.
Before we jump into this small list of celebrity teeth whitening tricks, it’s important to note that no amount of extraordinarily expensive surgeries or teeth-friendly superfoods can be a substitute for good, honest oral hygiene. Continue to brush your teeth twice a day, look after them as you would be expected to, and maybe these odd tricks will help give you that extra shade you’ve been searching for!
Oil pulling sounds far more painful than it is. Don’t worry, you’re not pulling your teeth here, although the method itself won’t be particularly appetising for everyone. A teeth care method opted for by renowned naturalist Gwyneth Paltrow, oil pulling dates back around 3,000 years to the early Indian civilisations, giving it that much-loved ‘ancient method’ tag.
Oil pulling is a straightforward but slightly lengthy process which involves swishing a natural oil – such as sesame or coconut – around the mouth in large quantities, for about 20 minutes a day. Essentially, this is a more extravagant mouthwash which will, like a modern cleaner, remove debris from the teeth. Celebrities claim this also pulls toxins from inside the body, but dentists are not jumping at supporting this just yet.
This is probably the smartest celebrity hack you can use, the type of thing that you hear and wonder “how did I never think of that?!” Some of the biggest celebrities, such as the Kardashian family, have sworn by this method, probably due to its simplicity.
This method is a simple trick of the light. By having a darker tan, your teeth will instantly come across as being brighter without any specialist work. If going to the local tanning salon feels like too much of a leap, then the method can even work by changing the colour of your lipstick – opting for a dark shade will make your teeth shine brighter, while certain blue hues are believed to cancel out the yellow tones your gnashers may have!
This is one of the rare tricks where dentists agree on its merits: eating – in a shocking twist of fate – is good for your teeth!
Now, before you grab that family bag of crisps for yourself, it’s important to note that this is not a free reign to just eat anything. The key to this tooth whitening method is eating high-fibre foods, preferably fruit and vegetables such as apples (yes, apples), pears and that go-to healthy food, celery. This is less about healthy eating, though, and more about how we eat, because by consuming these foods with excess chewing they act as a natural exfoliant, removing plaque from the teeth and gums!
Blue light kits are one of the most prominent teeth whitening trends on the market right now alongside things such as charcoal toothpaste, and it is in extensive use by celebrities and the general public alike. These kits come with a gel substance and a strong UV or LED blue light, which when used on your teeth together in short but frequent sessions can cause them to brighten by a couple of shades. However, the long-term advantages of these products are debated by professionals, while they are also not as cost-effective as other celebrity hacks.
